Duffle Luggage

How to get Your Home Deer and trophy elk hunting that Airline baggage!

With a little work pre-preparation before leave the hunting camp, you can make your trophy deer or elk rack strong enough to compete with all the other luggage company Samsonite and porters. Although this article is primarily for hunters who travel internationally, it will also work travel domestic airline as well.

As international trophy hunter, I personally hunted and fished in 5 continents. Airline travel is a necessary means of transport to most destinations I have visited hunting. The ability to bring your trophy back as luggage can save you up to six months time and up $ 750 or more in expenses related to importation and transportation. Not all countries will, but some do. The economy can almost pay for taxidermy. I brought back trophies as baggage from Canada, Mexico and Iceland. In January 2010, some airlines have greater restrictions on wood packed as luggage. I highly recommend that you check with your preferred airline before purchasing your tickets.

Cap or rug should be frozen.
An important factor you must consider is the ability to keep the Cape frozen or rug from the moment you leave your hunting destination until the time you get home. In many cases, this requires 24 hours for a good hard frost. The cloak or a carpet to be folded several times to save space and frozen solid. Hunters take their trophies at the last day without having time to freeze in the camp might consider staying an extra day, especially if you travel to a foreign country return to the United States or who have many stops. There is a new law in Mexico states that your cape should be frozen before you press the border.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Customs to check your cloak or a carpet is frozen as they do not want blood to go through the luggage and the gel also kill unwanted insects coming to the United States. Put your cape or a wet carpet in a black garbage bag twice, then freeze. Make sure to put a name on your tag Cap. The tag should have your full contact on one side and contact information taxidermist other. That way, if your cape or carpet separated from your luggage, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife will know how to contact you. Then head frozen and packaged in a collapsible cooler insulated. In my last trip to Mexico, I brought the cape of a Mule Deer in the Sonoran Desert 10 "x10" x9 "folding insulated cooler with space to spare. Can I put the cooler in my luggage Cabela's. If you bring a burst of animal size, you'll need a larger cooler.

When you get home, take your right to your taxidermist frozen cloak. Let frozen as he or she may not have time to deal with the time you arrive. Remember, if you're from Canada, Mexico or any other foreign country, you must designate a USDA certified taxidermist on your form 3-177-1 and that's where you need to take your cape frozen. This does not apply to domestic travel.

Protect your horn, wood and shell rupture.
Your trophy animal horns or wood are the most susceptible to breakage during travel back with you on airline. There are 3 steps to protect them when packaged as luggage. You will not need a box with this method.

First, you need to protect each tooth or a point. You can do this with pieces cast garden hose cut into a variety of 3 "to 6" lengths. You can use a hose 5 / 8 or ¾ inch. Place the piece cut the pipe on the point until it reaches a rest when the diameter of the horn is greater than the diameter of the pipe. Be sure to least 1 inch to 1 ½ inch pipe extends beyond the tip and tape the hose to the individual tooth. Repeat this process until all the teeth of the crown are protected.

Second, wrap the cap with tape. Make sure your provider boiled the shell and removed all the flesh and brain matter. This is a U.S. Fish & Wildlife regulations.

Thirdly, you want to block the length of the interior of the main beams. In the case of a mule deer or whitetail deer, a brace should be sufficient. In the case of a large animal like an elk, you can use two braces. A brace is a good wood dowel or a good straight stick. You'll need to cut this splint to measure and place between one or two of the thickest portions of the main beam, usually between C-2 and C-3 (see photo). Once you cut your custom corset, tape it up and tape the corset as well. You do not want the hug to be able to move. Do not worry about the band, you can easily taxidermist to remove any residue of tape from the crown. Once your teeth are protected and that the spacers are in place, wrap the teeth and the main beams with bubble wrap and tape them up. Do not cover all the tags on the timber and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife will need to see them. For some hunters, this may seem a bit over-kill on the wood. I know some who got through with only teeth protected. International hunting are more expensive and the last thing I want to get my trophy of a lifetime is to get broken in transit. A lost tooth or two during the baggage handling will never recover and can be marked as such by Boone & Crockett, or Pope Safari Club International & Young. A little preparation can ensure your trophy arrives home in one piece.

Upon arrival of the airline meter.

When you save your luggage, ask the attendant at the counter of your timber to tag with a special treatment. They will no additional cost. You may incur extra baggage, however. If you're a frequent flier with elite status, the costs of excess baggage may be waived. Be sure and ask the attendant at the counter.

Skip Customs and U.S. Fish & Wildlife

Every time you come back from a different country, you should get your luggage and clear customs. Make sure you report all your trophy or it could be a seizure. Make sure you have all your documents in order. This includes your U.S. Fish & Wildlife 3-177-1 form and documentation from your provider. The documentation should include the providers of your hunting license foreign tag game (which should be placed on your wood or horn before leaving the country) and any documentation indicating the license and outfitting of the property where the hunt took place have been legal to hunt.

Having all these documents in your hand when you approach the U.S. Fish & Wildlife part of U.S. Customs. The officer certainly appreciate that and it will make your transition run a lot smoother. After passing through Customs and U.S. Fish & Wildlife, you check your luggage to your destination final. If you are hunting in the country (the U.S.), you need not go through customs or U.S. Fish & Wildlife.

Travel Package list pre-

You want to take a number of things in your luggage you may not be able to find or have time to buy to your destination. Most of these items will be good in a big bag of Cabela's duffel type with your hunting equipment. You need the following;

1. A roll of bubble wrap. (Available in any office supply store like Staples or Office Max)

2. A roll of tape cloth (available in any office supply store like Staples or Office Max)

3. Pieces of garden hose cut to length different. Get ready for the biggest deer or elk usually taken in the field. This way you will not run out. Look in the shelter garden so that old leaky pipes you have not yet cast.

4. Peg wooden ½ "or 5 / 8" diameter. Again prepare for the biggest game usually taken in the field. Ask your outfitter differences rack. Get it for two deer and Elk. Pegs can purchased at any home improvement store such as Home Depot, Lowes or Menards, etc.

5. Foldable cooler. You can find them Wal-Mart for $ 10 – $ 15.

6. Tags taxidermy. Ask your advisor to hunt or make your own. I recommends rolling tags. You should have one for wood, one for the Cape and one for the cooler.

7. Links for plastic Zip fix tags taxidermy.

8. 2 Mil Heavy Trash bags to wrap your cloak or a carpet.

If you request, your provider may be willing to take these factors before arriving camp, which will save some space in your luggage. If you travel to a hunting destination home, you can purchase these items and sent to your outfitter. I would not recommend shipping if you are going to Canada, Mexico or any other international destination, because it would be too cost for shipping, customs, etc and they did package may go to the outfitter in time. Ask your provider for an address and send UPS well in advance. Make sure that there will be someone to accept the package. During hunting season, many outfitters in the area.

With a little advance planning and assistance from your agent hunt , you will be able to return to home your next trophy deer or elk as baggage and not have to worry that it is broken by baggage handlers or other luggage heavy. You can use the saved money to apply to the bill of taxidermy.
