Japan in America: the links between Hiroshima and Hawaii
What is the connection between Hiroshima and Hawaii?
Easy!
Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the outbreak of the Pacific War, and America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima four years later bring to an end.
Which is true, but it is interesting, the connections run much deeper than that and go back to the late nineteenth century when the boom in the Hawaiian sugar industry attracted a large number of Japanese male migrant workers seeking to escape economic conditions difficult in Japan that this country has undergone modernization.
Initially, the workers came from the area of Yokohama Japan. However, they are not satisfactory more docile and more Japanese workers in rural areas such as Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures have preferred to work in the plantations sugar.
The young men who went to Hawaii found that there were no Japanese women around whom they can marry. A new industry arose then that is referred to as wives "image". Girls who want to marry would be to send photos to a agency and receive a selection of pictures of eligible men in Japan. Once a choice has been made, the young woman take a boat and sail to Hawaii to meet and marry her intended husband.
Those Japanese who emigrated to Hawaii known as the "first generation" or "Issei" Japanese. It was impossible for them to obtain U.S. citizenship. Their However, children born in America, grew up as American citizens and are known as the "second generation" or "Nisei" Japanese Americans.
However, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor brought America into the Second World War, the Japanese community is in a difficult situation. On the U.S. west coast of Japan, both Japanese nationals and American citizens, were arrested and concentrated in the "war relocation" camps.
In Hawaii, however, the situation was different than the Japanese made a significant minority of the population, approximately 34% in 1941, and were examined by Lt. Gen. Delos Emmons is necessary for the war effort.
There was a deep suspicion of the Japanese Americans who were serving in the U.S. armed forces at the beginning of the Pacific War, with fears that they could act as agents of the enemy. Nevertheless, in the spring of 1942 a new US-Japanese unit was formed on the Nisei soldiers and called the 100th Infantry Battalion, serving under officers Caucasus.
In 1943, the unit went into action on the beachhead at Salerno in Italy. The 100th was later absorbed into the 442, a unit of Nisei new recruits. At the end of the war, had fought in 100th/442nd seven seasons in Italy, France and Germany and in possession of 18,000 Gallantry.
Because so many first-generation Japanese-American immigrants went to Hawaii from Hiroshima, Many Nisei soldiers would have had relatives living in the area of Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped August 6, 1945.
After the war, veterans returned home Hawaiian Nisei changed by the experience of war and determined to fight for their constitutional rights. Much took advantage of the GI Bill of 1944 to obtain a university education. Many of them entered the legal profession and others.
In 1952, the first generation have obtained U.S. citizenship and voting rights two years later, dozens of Japanese Americans were candidates for legislators in Hawaii. At that time, Hawaii was a territory and not a state of the United States the right to vote so full were denied until Japanese Americans and others have succeeded in their campaign to Hawaii is a state of the United States, which took place in 1959.
Today Hawaii remains one of the most popular destinations overseas for Japanese tourists, many of whom travel to Hiroshima and feel quite "Home" when they arrive in Hawaii and discover they have many opportunities to speak Japanese, and perhaps even the dialect of Hiroshima Japanese.
