Key West

Key West, Florida (The Conch Republic)

Originally inhabited by Indians Calussa, the Spanish conquistadors tried to take over this area of the first estate in the South West Keys. The beaches became the burial place for most of the natives, giving the island the name of Bone Island, Cayo Hueso in Spanish. The British anglicized the name to Key West.

John Simonton, and American businessman, bought the island of Juan Pablo Salas and developed the island with the help of Greene, Whitehead and Fleming. They encouraged the Navy to open a base combat piracy in the region.

The island has prospered because coral reefs have many ships to Davy Jones Locker. Many became Many millionaires recover wrecks. At one point the residents of Key West became the richest city per capita in the United States.

Henry Morrison Flagler, against all odds and better judgments, built a railroad from Homestead to Key West. The first train arrived on January 22, 1912. This connected Key West with the mainland. Key West, Havana, Cuba was only ninety miles. Regarded as the eighth wonder of the modern world, the railway overseas spans 42 sections of sea of pavement and bridges, the longest being seven miles. From 1912 to 1935 Key West has exploded as a tourist center and business. major class five hurricane destroyed much of the railway in 1935. Again in Key West have been cut off from the mainland.

The State of Florida purchased overseas Railroad right of way and turned it into the Overseas Highway in 1938, using the platform and Henry Flagler built bridges.

The Second World War has brought new prosperity to the island with the naval base. Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams lived and visited the island. Cuban tobacco has become the hand-rolled cigars.

In 1981, the government has put in us roadblocks near Key Largo, cutting off the tourism industry of Key West. Not too sure why this happened. The citizens of Key West has decided to secede. They formed the Conch (pronounced Polypore) Republic. Many still fly today. They demanded billions in compensation and foreign aid. The U.S. government is ignoring their wishes, but they remove the obstacles.

Today, Key West feeds mainly on tourism. Arriving by driving the 128 miles along the road overseas on old railroad bed, or fly into Key West airport, or take The Key West Express ferry from Marco Island and Ft. Myers Beach. To familiarize yourself with the island to take 1 ½ to 2 hours Conch Tour Train. Tickets can be purchased booth at the train or stand in Flagler's old town, near Mallory Square tickets. The tour moves around the streets of Key West: orientation of the large island. Other forms of transport on the island are the electric cars, bicycles, mopeds, taxis, cars and bicycles for two. walking in the streets, perhaps, is the best way to see the island, which is four miles long and a mile wide. Traffic can be a real challenge, especially along U.S. 1, which has its terminus at Mile Marker 0.

Looking for action? Duval Street is your objective. Stop and drink a beer at the Hemingway watering hole, Sloppy Joe's bar and restaurant (the original bar is ½ block houses at Captain Tony Saloon). If your interests lean toward Jimmy Buffett, Margaritaville go, just four blocks from the street. Top and bottom Duval restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and watching invite everyone to the narrow sidewalks. You might even find one of the chickens Key West's famous promenade street.

Other highlights of Hemingway house, with guided tours $ 12.00 running in this time. Views from the outside are free. Across Whitehead Street is the old lighthouse and keepers quarters. The lighthouse was moved inland to protect cons hurricanes. A couple more blocks down the street is the Truman White House. President Truman used the residents and many dependencies during its mandate. Other dignitaries also followed his example: John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Colin Powell. Speaking of President Truman, not to be missed Margaret Truman is the Laundromat. Rumor has it he was appointed to Margaret Truman, daughter of the president. Its location is at the corner of streets and by Margaret Truman. So his name.

Along Truman Street stands the convent of Our Lady of the Sea Many survivors of the hurricane of 1935 were treated. The nuns built a cave near the church in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes. When hurricane season approaches light candles in the cave like a prayer to keep Key West, free and secure. A marker designates the southernmost point in the continental United States. Tourists love to be photographed by him.

We had dinner at Pepe's restaurant on Caroline Street, near the Flagler Station. The restaurant, founded in 1909, features U.S. food in abundance. I struggled to finish my meatloaf sandwich open face.

A trip to Key West are made in many sports: parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, riding the glass bottom boats, deep sea fishing, or simply relax on the beach side Atlantic Ocean. A day trip in the Dry Tortugas National Park (Fort Jefferson) departs daily from Key West.

Over while people watching, the climate and the relaxed atmosphere that attracts people, young and old, to the Conch Republic. It beckons you.
