UFC's lightweight division has certainly had it's ups and downs during the year elapsed. With two positive tests for steroids and BJ Penn coming home, it is time to reassess the classification in the UFC lightweight division.
Lightweight in the UFC are considered at 155 pounds, but most of the guys in this list to walk more than 155 pounds. Sean Sherk and BJ Pen all both participated successfully to a higher weight and veterans of the Ultimate Joe Stevenson and Kenny Florian have dropped to 155. Let us not lose time and have the list.
6. Roger Huerta was virtually unknown to UFC fans a year ago, but with five consecutive victories added at the time (To his total to 15 in a row) and a sports illustrated cover Huerta made a household name and fan favorite fight. I first started to take notice of Huerta his decision victory over Leonard Garcia at UFC 69. Huerta seemed endless in the cardiovascular control and added two more impressive victories since then. A cons Douglas Evans and Alberto Crane cons very difficult. Huerta does not quite make my top 5, but it certainly deserves a special mention and placement # 6.
5. Din Thomas wins over Matt Serra owns and Jens Pulver. That alone is not enough Din move into the top 5, but its performance since the final season of Ultimate Fighter 4 are. Din has defeated Rich Clementi, Clay Guida and Jeremy Stephens and with those three wins on the difficult conditions I give a rating of Din # 5. I think Din is a tough match for anyone at 155.
4 Kenny Florian is one of the worst nicknames in the martial arts "KenFlo", but this should not be held against him. He was won five of its last six, most of them apparently with little effort. It was loose in the fight with Sean Sherk lightweight title, but not before opening a stomach turning cut on Sherk and give "The Muscle Shark" a good battle.
3. Joe Stevenson has won 13 of his last 14 fights, including victories over Melvin Guillard, Edwards and Yves Kurt Pellegrino. Ususally that puts Joe right in the mix to 155 and I expect to get a title shot soon.
2 Sean Sherk has rolled throughout the competition he has faced since he moved to 155. It is easy to meet Kenny Florian and Hermes Franca and well deserves its # 2. I think some guys could give Sean a race, but with Seans strength and conditioning, it will be difficult to defeat "The Muscle Shark".
1. BJ Penn has exactly one fight to light during the last four years, so why is it considered # 1 on my list? Just because BJ Penn is the best light fighter in the world. BJ Penn has fought the best at 155 and 170 and held his own with each of them. He is 1-1 in his fights with long weight champion Welterweight Matt Hughes and very nearly defeated the future at that weight, Georges St Pierre. He holds a victory over Jens Pulver and Din Thomas. Sean Sherk (who is at No. 2) has lost badly to both Hughes and St Pierre and in my mind that BJ is a totally different level. Takanori Gomi comes up at Penn UFC BJ holds the top spot on my list of 155 lb fighters.
Many will disagree with my list, after all, it lacks Hermes Franca, Manny Gamburyan, Spencer Fisher and others. No top 5 list is complete, or entirely without flaws. This is mine, for what it's worth. Naturally, when Spencer, Manny or defeat Hermes one of the others on my list, I'll be happy to move into the top 5.
